Primavera: Fiorentina beaten 1-0 at Empoli

Emiliano Bigica’s Fiorentina Primavera side slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Empoli on Saturday.

Empoli took the lead on the stroke of half time after Dmitrijs Zelenkovs curled home a fine free-kick. Fiorentina had a number of chances to equalise in the second half, but were unable to capitalise on any of the opportunities they created.

“We knew it had the potential to be a scrappy game and so it proved,” said Bigica after the game. “I think we produced the right kind of performance: we showed humility but unfortunately we were punished by a piece of individual brilliance from a free-kick and Empoli were able to build on that. We tried everything to turn it around. There weren’t any big individual mistakes that cost us.”

Despite the defeat, Bigica was keen to keep some perspective around the team’s current run of poor form.

“This is a period that will help the players and myself to improve,” he said. “We’re trying to get ourselves out of this situation, which is by no means a crisis – we had a similar one two years ago and then we ended up getting to two finals. We need to keep our heads down, work hard and prepare for the Atalanta game.”
